after many years of ill health, 63‐year‐old
Franklin Delano Roosevelt suffered a brain haemorrhage. The longest serving President
in American history, the man
who had lifted his country from the turmoil
of the Great Depression to become the world's
preeminent
industrial and military power, was dead. [Iwan] Roosevelt had been
wheelchair‐bound since contracting polio in 1921,
so he had spent all his presidency
living with that disability
