Stalin finally got his way. It was agreed
that battle would be joined on the Western Front
in May 1944. British, American
and Commonwealth troops would invade France with the greatest amphibious
invasion force ever assembled. In return, Stalin agreed the Soviets
would declare war on Japan, however,
not until Germany was defeated. A formal agreement
had been reached, but in trying
to win over Stalin, Roosevelt had opened a rift
with Churchill. Roosevelt's sense of his relationship
with Churchill I think, is that by this point,
he's got Churchill in the bag
