heading towards Moscow, slowed their advance
as the Red Army dug in. Autumn rains
turned roads to mud. And then
the Russian winter set in. It was one of the coldest
of the twentieth century. Temperatures plummeted. And little winter equipment
was reaching German soldiers at the front. Their coats were too thin. They could not use
