Jesse:
You know, I think that book that I wrote, in a way, was like building something. So that I wouldn't forget the... details of the time that we spent together. You know, like just a reminder that... that once we really did meet! You know, that this was real! That this happened!
Celine:
Celine: I'm happy you're saying that, because... I mean, I always feel like a freak, because I'm never able to move on like... this! You know. People just have an affair, or even entire relationships... they break up and they forget! They move on like they would have changed brand of cereals! I feel I was never able to forget anyone I've been with. Because each person have... their own, specific qualities. You can never replace anyone. What is lost is lost. Each relationship, when it ends, really damages me. I never fully recover. That's why I'm very careful with getting involved, because... It hurts too much! Even getting laid! I actually don't do that... I will miss on the other person the most mundane things. Like I'm obsessed with little things. Maybe I'm crazy, but... when I was a little girl, my mom told me that I was always late to school. One day she followed me to see why. I was looking at chestnuts falling from the trees, rolling on the sidewalk, or... ants crossing the road, the way a leaf casts a shadow on a tree trunk... Little things. I think it's the same with people. I see in them little details, so specific to each of them, that move me, and that I miss, and... will always miss. You can never replace anyone, because everyone is made of such beautiful specific details. Like I remember the way, your beard has a bit of red in it. And how the sun was making it glow, that... that morning, right before you left. I remember that, and... I missed it! I'm really crazy, right?

00:00:01.537 --> 00:00:03.095
It's not so bad, being a tourist.
00:00:03.033 --> 00:00:05.719
- Thanks for getting me on the boat. - You're welcome.
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.798
I think that book that I wrote was like building something...
00:00:09.042 --> 00:00:13.413
...so that I wouldn't forget the details of the time that we spent together.
00:00:13.799 --> 00:00:17.394
You know, like, just as a reminder, that once, we really did meet.
00:00:17.072 --> 00:00:20.553
You know, that this was real, this happened.
00:00:20.848 --> 00:00:22.759
I'm happy you're saying that, because...
00:00:23.999 --> 00:00:27.135
I mean, I always feel like a freak because I'm never able to move on like this:
00:00:28.439 --> 00:00:31.059
People just have an affair, or even entire relationships...
00:00:31.942 --> 00:00:34.217
...they break up and they forget.
00:00:34.486 --> 00:00:38.195
They move on like they would have changed brand of cereals.
00:00:38.991 --> 00:00:42.108
I feel I was never able to forget anyone I've been with...
00:00:42.411 --> 00:00:47.769
...because each person had their own specific qualities.
00:00:48.167 --> 00:00:52.797
You can never replace anyone. What is lost is lost.
00:00:54.173 --> 00:00:58.166
Each relationship, when it ends, really damages me. I never fully recover.
00:00:58.051 --> 00:01:01.547
That's why I'm very careful with getting involved...
00:01:01.847 --> 00:01:03.803
...because it hurts too much.
00:01:04.007 --> 00:01:07.999
Even getting laid, I actually don't do that...
00:01:07.001 --> 00:01:10.999
...because I will miss of the person the most mundane things.
00:01:10.999 --> 00:01:13.003
Like I'm obsessed with little things.
00:01:13.001 --> 00:01:15.755
Maybe I'm crazy, but when I was a little girl...
00:01:16.006 --> 00:01:18.999
...my mom told me that I was always late to school.
00:01:19.114 --> 00:01:21.389
One day she followed me to see why.
00:01:21.007 --> 00:01:25.818
I was looking at chestnuts falling from the trees, rolling on the sidewalk...
00:01:26.163 --> 00:01:31.681
...or ants crossing the road, the way a leaf casts a shadow on a tree trunk.
00:01:32.999 --> 00:01:34.002
Little things.
00:01:34.063 --> 00:01:36.001
I think it's the same with people.
00:01:36.999 --> 00:01:39.764
I see in them little details, so specific to each of them...
00:01:40.007 --> 00:01:44.996
...that move me and that I miss and will always miss.
00:01:44.348 --> 00:01:45.001
You can never replace anyone...
00:01:46.005 --> 00:01:49.804
...because everyone is made of such beautiful, specific details.
00:01:53.044 --> 00:01:56.999
Like, I remember the way your beard has a bit of red in it...
00:01:57.486 --> 00:02:00.006
...and how the sun was making it glow...
00:02:00.364 --> 00:02:03.006
...that morning right before you left.
00:02:04.993 --> 00:02:07.083
I remembered that, and I missed it.
00:02:08.001 --> 00:02:09.001
Really crazy, right?
00:02:10.124 --> 00:02:13.999
Now I know for sure. You wanna know why I wrote that stupid book?
00:02:14.999 --> 00:02:17.988
- Why? - So you'd come to a reading in Paris...
00:02:17.381 --> 00:02:21.374
...and I could walk up to you and ask, "Where the fuck were you?"
00:02:21.999 --> 00:02:24.008
No... You think I'd be here today?
00:02:24.346 --> 00:02:28.703
I'm serious. I think I wrote it, in a way, to try to find you.
00:02:29.101 --> 00:02:31.013
Okay, that's... I know that's not true...
00:02:31.001 --> 00:02:33.583
...but that's sweet of you. - I think it is true.
00:02:33.999 --> 00:02:36.001
What were the chances of us ever meeting again?
00:02:37.001 --> 00:02:40.001
After that December, I'd say almost zero.
00:02:40.779 --> 00:02:42.001
But we're not real anyway, right?
00:02:42.001 --> 00:02:46.012
We're just characters in that old lady's dream.
00:02:46.999 --> 00:02:48.999
She's on her deathbed, fantasizing about her youth.
00:02:48.001 --> 00:02:50.999
So of course we had to meet again.
00:02:51.999 --> 00:02:54.001
Oh, God. Why weren't you there in Vienna?
00:02:56.999 --> 00:02:59.999
- I told you why. - I know why, I just...
00:03:00.215 --> 00:03:02.001
I wish you would have been.
00:03:02.999 --> 00:03:04.785
Our lives might have been so much different.
00:03:05.002 --> 00:03:07.999
You think so?
00:03:07.001 --> 00:03:08.989
I actually do.
00:03:09.999 --> 00:03:12.001
Maybe not. Maybe we would have hated each other eventually.
00:03:12.001 --> 00:03:15.999
What, like we hate each other now?
00:03:16.398 --> 00:03:20.001
You know, maybe we're... We're only good at brief encounters...
00:03:21.993 --> 00:03:25.001
...walking around in European cities, in warm climate.
00:03:25.999 --> 00:03:28.001
Oh, God. Why didn't we exchange phone numbers and stuff?
00:03:29.003 --> 00:03:31.148
Why didn't we do that?
00:03:31.001 --> 00:03:33.999
Because we were young and stupid.
00:03:33.958 --> 00:03:36.999
Do you think we still are?
00:03:36.001 --> 00:03:38.001
I guess when you're young you just believe...
00:03:38.999 --> 00:03:41.999
...there'll be many people you'll connect with.
00:03:41.001 --> 00:03:44.999
Later in life you realize it only happens a few times.
00:03:44.999 --> 00:03:48.999
And you can screw it up, you know. Misconnect.
00:03:48.001 --> 00:03:50.864
The past is the past. It was meant to be that way.
00:03:51.999 --> 00:03:53.999
You really believe that? That everything's fated?
00:03:53.001 --> 00:03:57.001
Well, you know, the world might be less free than we think.
00:03:58.148 --> 00:03:59.786
Yeah?
00:04:00.001 --> 00:04:03.863
When given these exact circumstances, that's what will happen every time.
00:04:04.196 --> 00:04:07.108
Two part hydrogen, one part oxygen, you'll get water every time.
00:04:07.999 --> 00:04:10.684
No, I mean, what if your grandmother had lived a week longer, you know?
00:04:10.995 --> 00:04:13.999
Or passed away a week earlier? Days, even?
00:04:13.999 --> 00:04:15.999
Things might have been different.
00:04:15.541 --> 00:04:19.998
- You can't think like that, it's... - You shouldn't on most things, but...
00:04:19.002 --> 00:04:24.999
It's just, on this one, it seemed like something was off, you know.
00:04:25.001 --> 00:04:29.998
In the months leading up to my wedding, I was thinking about you all the time.
00:04:29.001 --> 00:04:33.002
Even on my way there, I'm in the car, a buddy of mine is driving me downtown...
00:04:33.003 --> 00:04:36.998
...and I'm staring out the window and I think I see you...
00:04:36.001 --> 00:04:38.548
...not far from the church, right...
00:04:38.002 --> 00:04:41.997
...folding up an umbrella and walking into a deli...
00:04:41.483 --> 00:04:44.997
...on the corner of 3th and Broadway.
00:04:45.279 --> 00:04:48.998
And I thought I was going crazy. But now I think it probably was you.
00:04:49.002 --> 00:04:52.997
I lived on th and Broadway.
00:04:53.978 --> 00:04:54.834
You see?
00:04:56.002 --> 00:04:59.999
So, what is it like to be married? You haven't talked much about that.
00:05:00.999 --> 00:05:04.997
I haven't? How weird.
00:05:04.923 --> 00:05:08.001
I don't know. We met, you know, when I was in college.
